Why it works as a gift
Boat owners name their boats, talk about them, and photograph them more than their kids. A Hull Card puts the boat on the same kind of card as a ball player, with her name in big letters, a photo you pick, and the specs on the back. It costs less than a new set of fenders and means more.
What you need to make one
Just the boat's name and a good photo. If you know the builder, model, year or hailing port, add those too. You see the finished card before you order, so there's no guessing, and you can order 1 card or a stack of 100 for them to hand out at the marina.
When to give it
Christmas, Father's Day, a birthday, the day they bring a new boat home, or the end of a good season. Pair it with a photo from the summer and it becomes the one gift they keep on the helm.

Questions
Do I need the hull ID to make a gift card?
No. The boat's name is the only thing you need. Everything else is optional.
Can I keep it a surprise?
Yes. Ship it to yourself and hand it over, or ship straight to them. The order comes in a plain package.
What if I don't know the specs?
Leave them out, or add your own lines like "Captain: Dad" or "Biggest fish: 31 in".
